Overview of the Torah Portion: Shoftim which means judges or rulers, focuses largely on the rules of conduct that guide interactions between man and man particularly in leadership. Moses encourages the community to pursue justice and to appoint righteous leaders who will judge with justice. Moses also provides guidance for how they should behave in their leadership roles including providing guidance for the proposed monarchy and includes a discussion on knowing the right thing to do even if the Scriptures do not specifically tell us. We will discuss the nature of human leadership in the context of flawed humanity, noting the messianic hope of the prophet like Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15. Should leaders make poor decisions then war will often result, so the Torah Portion concludes with guidelines for rules for warfare.
