One of the great encouragements for all CMJ staff is the awareness of the faithful prayer support covering the many aspects of the ministry of CMJ both here in the UK and in Israel.

As a Christian I have grown over the years in understanding the importance of prayer. One of the great encouragements for all CMJ staff is the awareness of the faithful prayer support covering the many aspects of the ministry of CMJ both here in the UK and in Israel. However, over the many years of my Christian life, as an active sportsman, I have concluded that prayer is not effective in regards to football results or golf scores!

This conclusion, however, I am beginning to challenge, for as a Cambridge United Supporter I am currently witnessing the best ever start to a football season – after 16 games Cambridge United stands undefeated and six points clear at the top of the league (modesty forbids me to say which league). Maybe it is no coincidence that the home ground of Cambridge united is called the Abbey?

In thinking aloud about the success of my football team I am aware of the mixture most supporters carry with them in terms of expectations, disappointment and frustration. Maybe there is some connection with the experience of being a Christian, although as Christians we know we will end up on the winning side!

For me as a Christian I need to think carefully about having proper expectations and the ability to deal with disappointment etc. However, above all I sense as I try and enter more deeply into prayer and worship that the Lord wants us all to increase our expectations, to widen our hope and to deepen our requests. The verse of Scripture which is echoing in my mind on this is Ephesians 3:20: maybe you would like to read it and think about it!

Happy supporting and praying
