Paul and Janey have led many Kesher courses, including several for the volunteers during our time working in Jerusalem at Christ Church.

Paul Hames leading the first session of the Kesher Course

Have you ever considered where the roots of the Christian faith stem from? CMJ leads one of the CFI Kesher courses which delves into some of the connections between Judaism and Christianity.

Janey writes, “It’s always been quite an eye-opener to see how many people are unaware of the origins of their faith - everything has it’s roots, right?

As one person understood it, “Christianity began on December 25th in Bethlehem when God’s plan of redemption started with the birth of baby Jesus in manger.”

While one visitor to the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem stated, “If I’d known Jesus was a Jew I’d never have become a Christian’.

While yet another said, “Jesus was a Palestinian revolutionary.”

And yet another shocker; “The ‘Old’ Testament is just that: Old. The New Testament is all we need surely? - after all we are in a new era!

What a shock for these people then, when in just our introduction, we uncover the truth found in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created…” The Hebrew word for “God” in this instance is “Elohim”. Any Hebrew word with an “im” at the end of it is plural. So with this new insight based on the original Hebrew text we can read the verse as it was originally written, “In the beginning God (plural) created…”

What!!! Gods??? Here we have in the very first verse in the bible the Trinitarian God and Jesus the creator of all things, and the Holy Spirit!

Colossians 1:16, “For in Him all things were created: things in heaven…

John 1:3, “Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was…

So how did people receive the first session, last night?

Read them for yourself: “Big and important chunks are missing from what I’m being taught…” “Having a bit of Hebrew taught at the beginning of the session really opened up the Scriptures to me” (On learning that Jesus was born in Beit Lechem - the house of bread) “I’m finding it hard to get my head around the fact that Jesus wasn’t English - but I’m really looking forwards to next week - bring it on!”

We need to thank our friends and colleagues at Christian Friends of Israel for the great content of this Kesher course which has enabled us to share this great teaching.

We still have a few places left if you’d like to join us on Thursday nights! Just call Janey on 07905833047 or email paulandjaneyh@cmj.org.uk”
